PHOENIX - A drug investigation Monday night ended with the death of an innocent driver when police say the suspect took off and crashed into another car.
Authorities say the suspect pulled over for an undercover police officer in a neighborhood near 35th Avenue and Northern, but when the officer approached the vehicle, the suspect revved his engine and sped off.
He didn't get very far. The suspect ended up running a stop sign and crashing into another vehicle. The driver of that car was killed.
Police say it happened so fast that the officer didn't even have time to get back in his car before the crash took place.
"There wasn't a lot of distance in this and it didn't take much.. enough for the suspect to gather enough speed from the location of the stop to that stop sign and it ended up deadly," said Phoenix Police Sgt. Trent Crump.
The suspect tried to get a way, but was taken into custody. Police believe he may have been impaired.
No names have been released in this case.
