Arizona Senate President: Deal reached in school funding lawsuit

PHOENIX (AP) -- Arizona Senate President Andy Biggs says a deal in principle has been reached to settle a long-running school funding lawsuit.

Biggs said late Saturday that documents were being prepared over the weekend and he will brief members of his Republican caucus Monday and Tuesday. House Speaker David Gowan notified Republican House members to come to the Capitol on Tuesday.

Biggs would not provide details of the agreement, saying it would be unfair to lawmakers for them to learn about it in the media.

The tentative agreement comes after weeks of negotiations between schools, Republican legislative leaders and Gov. Doug Ducey's staff. Those talks were jumpstarted by the failure in August of mediation between school districts and lawmakers.

Courts have ordered the Legislature to immediately pay an additional $331 million a year to schools for failing to fund annual inflation boosts but the case is under appeal.
