A 5-year-old girl was rushed to the hospital after accidentally shooting herself in the leg; people say the weapon belonged to her mother.
Authorities say the mother kept the gun in her purse, and while the family was eating breakfast and getting ready for school the 5-year-old went into the master bedroom and found the 9mm handgun.
"This is a sad thing to hear, the parents should have been careful having the weapon around like that, and I wish that family well," said Antonio Marcus.
Police say the bullet went through the little girl's leg. When paramedics arrived, the girl's mom was already administering first aid.
"It is a very sad, an unfortunate situation. It's a lesson for all responsible gun owners to continue to keep track of your firearms and keep them in such a state that they are inaccessible to small children. Use locks, locking cabinets, and so forth," said Sgt. Vance Lewis.
The 5-year-old and her three siblings were home with their mom; dad was at work.
Daniel Russell carries a gun with him all the time, and he also has kids.
"I pretty much teach about guns, and they are good for protection, but I keep them locked up in the safe, and they know better than to touch them," said Daniel Russell.
The girl was rushed to the hospital and expected to be ok. It's not clear if the mother will face any charges.
