We're learning more about the family behind the tragedy that unfolded when a mother killed her son and then took her own life inside a mesa hospital.

Hours after the devastating deaths we sat down with the father of Tami Griffith, the woman who committed this murder/suicide.

This horrific situation left a father and a grandfather grieving and searching for answers. And despite everything, Shannon Griffith still calls his daughter, "an excellent mother."

Today Shannon Griffith woke up to a father's nightmare.

"They meant everything to me, and now I don't know what I'm going to do," Griffith said.

His daughter Tami had not only killed herself, but her 5-year-old son Helios as well.

"I understand, I'm going to go out, get a job, continue life but the void that they left, I'm not sure what I'm going to do"

Shannon claims his grandson, although suffering from severe health issues, was happy, but that things took a turn when CPS made Tami sign over legal custody last week.

"They also went as far as making her sign a piece of paper saying that they have legal rights, which at that point, everyone could see at that point that she was very upset very distressed."

Shannon says Tami had a dark past, claiming she was molested by her mother's boyfriend and attempted suicide at 18, but he was convinced Tami had changed when Helios was born.

"He was her world, I mean she lived for that child, we gave up a lot just to take care of this child."

Now, lost and looking for answers, Shannon says he has a message for his grandson.

"That I'm sorry I failed him, I was supposed to be there to protect both of them, and I failed at it, you know. I didn't get the chance to do as much as I feel that I could have been able to do and I'll never get that chance again."

Shannon says he's looking into taking legal action against CPS for what he calls an assault on his daughter.
