5-year-old girl hit, killed by bus after running out of hotel room to parking lot

A 5-year-old girl ran out of her hotel room into a parking lot, where she was hit and killed by a bus late Friday night off Interstate 17 and Northern Avenue.

"If you got kids, keep them safe," says Ellison Edwards, who checked into Motel 6 when he saw a little girl, Makinzie Johnson, running around the parking lot. "[I] pulled in and checked in, and she was out running around and I asked her where her parents were, and she pointed up to a hotel room."

Edwards says he gave Johnson some advice.

"I told her, 'You need to stop running around in the parking lot.' She said okay." Edwards explains. "When I came back, it was taped off."

Ellison, worried his instincts were right, he asked police what happened. Police confirmed his fears.

"Watch their kids out here, man, sad situation," Edwards says. He has two kids of his own.

"I told the little girl to get out," Edwards continues. "Everybody around here was messed up last night out here for a while."

There is no word yet about whether the parents will face any charges or why Makinzie Johnson was there.

The bus driver was checked out and did not show any signs of impairment.
