Thanksgiving is just days away so this weekend the Phoenix Rescue Mission and its volunteers delivered food boxes.

The effort was part of the Fill-A-Box to Feed a Family event.

Jim Schubert and a group of co-workers spent the day volunteering.

“We've been familiar with the Phoenix Rescue Mission for years,” said Schubert.

But this year the small group decided to make a big difference.

“This is the first time we've done this though.” “We're grateful that we can be there to love on folks and we're just looking forward to meeting some new friends and hopefully bring smiles and joy to their hearts.”

Delivering smiles and joy were just part of it.

“Can you hold down that one...”

Thanks to donations made to the Phoenix Rescue Mission, the volunteers were also able to deliver the makings of a bountiful feast, lifting the spirits of valley families who otherwise wouldn't be able to afford one.

“Hey guys, are you ready for a delicious turkey dinner?”

“I’m just happy and you know just a little emotional. It’s nice to receive.”

This family and so many other families were extremely thankful for the helpful hand this Thanksgiving.

“We weren’t sure if we could, so yeah this helped out a lot.”

According to the Phoenix Rescue Mission, Arizona ranks among the worst state in the nation for homelessness, with more than 17,500 homeless individuals in Maricopa County alone, 40 percent of which are women and children in families.

The Mission volunteers like Schubert are working to change that.

“It’s a blessing to be able to give…,” Schubert said. “…to see the happy faces and the kids knowing that they are going to have a Thanksgiving dinner.”

“Happy Thanksgiving from the Phoenix Rescue Mission.”

The only thing that is asked in return is to pass the blessing along to others, which you can do because the Phoenix Rescue Mission takes donations all year long.
