It was a shooting that rocked the Northern Arizona University Campus. Steven Jones, a freshman at the school was accused of opening fire outside a dorm killing one student and wounding three others.

Jones sat silent inside a Flagstaff courtroom while his attorney began to lay out their case. He says Jones acted in self-defense.

His attorney says Jones was acting in self defense as they hammered out a timetable for this case.

In early October, NAU Police say Jones opened fire on a group of students in a parking lot outside an NAU dorm. Prosecutors say during a fight that happened minutes before the shooting, Jones went to car, got a gun and opened fire, killing Colin Brough and injuring three others.

Jones attorney say the freshman felt threatened and that is why he opened fire.

Body camera footage from the NAU Police shows Jones with a bloody mouth, and he was cooperating with officers.

Prosecutors however are not budging. Jones remains charged with first degree murder and in court prosecutors shot down the suggestion of a plea deal.
