It's a heart breaking story, five people killed in a head-on crash near Sun Lakes.

That crash happened late Sunday night, a family of four was in one car, and a single driver in another.

Court records show that lone driver had a history of DUI-related charges and convictions.

The crash remains under investigation and deputies say alcohol and speed may have played a factor.

On Tuesday loved ones remembered the family killed in the crash. The husband and wife had just renewed their vows according to the pastor of the church that held the memorial.

The couple and their two adult children were killed in the crash; the children were visiting their parents from out of state.

A memorial service was held at the Family of Christ Lutheran Church in Ahwatukee, where a week before the couple had renewed their vows on there 62nd wedding anniversary.

Rev. Dr. Wade Butler officiated as 86-year-old Frank Hooper surprised 85-year-old Darlene by asking her once again to marry him.

"I just know in that moment we were all hypnotized, I was too, it was mysterious," said Rev. Butler.

Exactly one week later they died along with their daughter Janice Mertens and son Steven Hooper in a head-on crash in Sun Lakes.

"I don't know why it happened, but I know now we are there to support the family, we are there to share our love and be there when they need us," said Butler.

The church members say the couple always helped. Frank always wrote music for the church and Darlene organized events. Both read books to the kids who left goodbye notes to the couple.

"If you looked up family, if you looked up marriage if you looked up love, and commitment, their pictures would be by all of those things because that's who they were," said Melanie Wempe.

The couple their friends say filled life with an enduring love, even after decades of marriage.

MCSO says the driver of the other vehicle may have been impaired and/or speeding. He also died in the crash.

Investigators say they will know more once toxicology test results come back from the lab.
