Mesa police shoot and kill man who refused to drop metal rod during confrontation

A valley man was shot and killed late Thursday night after he charged at a police officer with a weapon.

MESA, Ariz. (AP) -- Mesa police have identified a man fatally shot by police during a confrontation in his neighborhood near Loop 202 and Power Road.
Police said an officer shot 47-year-old Ivan Krstic Thursday night as Krstic wielded a 3-foot-long metal rod.
A police spokesman said Krstic was arrested in 2012 after allegedly making threats in the same neighborhood.
Detective Steve Berry says police got a call Thursday night that a man was acting erratically and banging something on a driveway and objects.
Berry says Krstic refused to drop the rod when police arrived. Berry said one officer used a stun gun on Krstic but that he then got up and, still wielding the rod, faced the officers before one shot him.
Berry says the officers perceived Krstic as a threat.

Neither of the two officers who were involved were hurt.

The case remains under investigation.
