PHOENIX - Flames swept through a home near 39th Avenue and Bell early Saturday morning, leaving a family of five without a place to live.
Fire crews say the family was getting up for a church event when the smoke detectors went off. The homeowner got out safely with his wife and three children.
According to Capt. Mike Billingsley, a public information officer with the Phoenix Fire Department, the flames started near an artificial Christmas tree, but the cause of the fire remains under investigation.
As many as 30 firefighters battled the blaze. Crews pulled out of the home when flames grew intense, and shortly thereafter the roof collapsed. It took nearly 15 minutes to get the fire under control.
The three children -- 9, 10 and 14 years old -- got out of the house safely. They'll be getting help from the Red Cross with a temporary place to stay.
