PHOENIX (KSAZ) - Phoenix Police say a homeowner was arrested after shooting a woman who had been trying to break into his work vehicle early on Saturday morning.
Officers responded to a home near 51st Avenue and McDowell at about 5 a.m. Phoenix Police spokesperson Sgt. Trent Crump says the person living in the home, 41-year-old Pedro Sales, had discovered the woman was breaking into his work vehicle and was stealing two pieces of construction equipment.
Police say the man fired a couple of shots in the air, and the woman drove away with his property in a vehicle. They say the homeowner then got in his vehicle and chased down the suspect, firing shots at the woman and hitting her at least once. The man retrieved his property, returned home, and called police.
Investigators believe that Sales' actions went beyond the need to defend himself or his property. Sales has been booked on charges of aggravated assault and a weapon violation.
The woman was treated for non-life threatening injuries, and police are continuing their investigation.
Sales has been charged with aggravated assault.
