PHOENIX (KSAZ) - Phoenix Police say a homeowner went too far when he shot a suspected burglar who was trying to get away. The homeowner is now in jail, but his family wants him out. FOX 10's Jessica Flores spoke to the man's family.
Pedro Sales' family says they've been victims of burglary multiple times. This time, their father apparently took things into his own hands and say if they could do everything all over again, they would have done things differently and called the police first.
It was 5:00 a.m. Saturday near 51st Avenue and McDowell Road when police say Sales chased down a woman who allegedly stole tools from his work truck, then shot her twice.
We went to his home on Monday where Sales' 16-year-old son told us he was there when his father fired the gun. Because the son is a minor, we aren't showing his face. He says he alerted his father when he saw the woman taking things from their truck. He says his father got his unpermittedd gun and was trying to defend his property.
But police say Sales crossed the line when he stepped beyond his home. According to the police report, when Sales allegedly fired the weapon into the air, the woman took off. Police say Sales followed her.
The police report says Johannae Walker dropped the chainsaw she allegedly stole and was walking away from Sales at a neighboring property when Sales allegedly fired his weapon three times, striking her twice.
Now Sales is facing aggravated assault charges.
The woman is recovering in a hospital with non-life threatening injuries.
Sales' sons at home are left hoping to get their dad out of jail. Bail has been set at $150,000. Sales' family says they are getting a lawyer and hoping to post bond.
