'Girl on Wave': Local filmmaker shoots documentary on champion windsurfer

- One woman is making waves as a champion windsurfer and now she's telling her story.

A Scottsdale filmmaker has made a documentary about Sarah Hauser, who was named the American champion.

The documentary talks about Sarah's journey as a professional athlete. She sat down with us to talk about the film, her love for the sport and why more women should try it.

In a sport mostly dominated by men, Sarah is at the top of her game.

"It makes you believe in magic sometimes."

Sarah says she first learned about windsurfing from her dad while she was growing up in New Caledonia, an island that lies between Fiji and Australia.

"That's when I really fell in love with the sport and decided that I wanted to make it a career," she said.

But those dreams were put on hold while she studied computer science in France.

"When I got my degree and started looking for a job, I was still dreaming about windsurfing.  I wasn't sure if it was a good idea, but I jumped on the opportunity."

Turns out, it was a good idea.

Sarah moved to Maui when she was 23-years-old and began competing. Three years later, she was named the American Windsurfing Tour champion.

Scottsdale-based Echo Films has even made a documentary to tell her story, called "Girl on Wave."

"We just wake up in the morning and we shoot as much as we can.. surfing, windsurfing, paddle boating, underwater, rock running, my workouts," said Sarah.

She hopes the documentary and her career will inspire women to try the sport.

'"I think something that scares women away from the sport is the fact that it looks technical. It looks like there are a lot of parts to put together.. you have to add the sail, but it's actually very simple."

She also hopes people take away another lesson.

"I want them to believe in their dreams and never think it's too late to chase a dream."

The documentary also features interviews with world-class athletes and other windsurfing champions.
