Star Show laser light: Popular holiday decoration is a target for thieves

FOX 10's Marc Martinez reports.

One holiday decoration is so popular this year, you can't even find it on store shelves. It's the Star Shower laser light and it turns your whole house into a giant holiday decoration -- but it's also a hot target for thieves.

These lights run from about $25 to $75, but they are so hard to find. People are buying them on eBay and Craigslist for up to three times the sticker price.

And people who were lucky enough to find them, now find themselves being targeted by thieves. Several valley neighborhoods have been hit recently and those homeowners want to warn others.

"We've had 'em for maybe a week, week and a half, and last night they were gone," said David Weiss, who had two of the lights projecting on his home in central Phoenix.

"It was easy an affordable and pretty," he said.

Until the house went dark Tuesday night.

"And then I looked down and I was like, no.. they're actually just gone. Somebody actually unplugged them, took them out of the ground and carried them off," said Weiss.

"We had it for three days, projecting on our house and then it was gone," said Krista Moreland.

Moreland and her family bought a laser projector to add to their Christmas decorations this year.

"With the projector, it made your whole house look like it was sparkling and the kids really enjoyed going out and looking at it and it just added a lot of ambience to our front yard," she said.

Now all that's left is an empty extension cord.

"In my opinion, they're selling them, trying to make a quick buck before Christmas and stealing joy from others, which is awful," said Moreland.

Peoria police say there were dozens of stolen laser lights in the Moreland's neighborhood over the weekend.

The advice from both Krista and David: If you have one of these lights in your front yard, take it inside overnight or use it in your backyard, just to be safe.
