Healthways employees buy gifts for the less fortunate

Shop till you drop on your employer's dime. That's what 300 employees at Healthway got to do at one WalMart store, and it was for a good cause.

"One little girl wanted a basketball, so I got her a basketball with a matching sweat outfit," said Amanda Williams.

They each got a card with a specialized list from a child or adult.

"Well they put a few things on their list, but you try and imagine who the person is, and you're like okay, this is a senior, they go to our fitness classes, let me get them a workout shirt or some workout pants," said Julie Erla.

In total, the group spent $25,000 on gifts, money that would otherwise be used for a company holiday party.

"Better than not having a holiday party for ourselves, so this is a holiday party," said Sid Stolz.

Once the gifts are sorted, they're put on a bus and delivered to the Boys and Girls Club of Chandler and Senior Citizens.

The employees say giving to others during the holidays is better than any party they would attend.

"We've seen tears every year, they are so excited," said Erla.

This is the 16th year that Healthways has done this; they hope their giving spirit rubs off on other companies across the nation.
