Phoenix, AZ - Family and friends joined together Saturday to honor 19-year-old Veronica McGarvy.
They held a car wash in hopes of raising funds for funeral expenses and to help take care of her 3 year old daughter.
"Veronica was the sweetest girl you'd ever meet, she was always caring and loving, she could come into any room and light it up,” said the victim’s sister Rene McGarvy.
Police said McGarvy was killed December 6th by her ex-boyfriend and father of her child, 25-year-old Caleb Shaffery. According to court documents, Shaffery led her into the bedroom, bashing her skull with a hammer and stabbing her with a knife.
He allegedly admitted to the crime to his mother, who told police he suffers from bi-polar disorder.
Shaffery is now in jail being held on a $1 million bond and facing one count of first degree murder.
"I hope that no family has to go through the pain and the loss and the suffering that we are going through. No one deserves to have to lose somebody in the matter that we did. No mother deserves to have to bury her child,” said Rene McGarvy.
The victim’s sister Rene McGarvy said the pain of from what happened to her baby sister to too much to bear.
"She's loving, she was the best sister anybody could ask for, the best friend anyone could ever ask for,” said Rene McGarvy.
The family has also set up a go fund me account to raise funds.
