GILA BEND, Ariz. - A bus driver is left in critical condition, and at least 12 others are hurt, in an accident involving a Arizona Department of Corrections bus on I-8 near Gila Bend.
The bus driver is reportedly severely injured. Two inmates and the bus driver were airlifted to nearby hospitals. Another 10 inmates were hurt and transported by ground ambulance.
The accident closed I-8 for several hours and the bus driver told Fox 10 that his truck overturned after he swerved to avoid an animal.
DPS says apparently the bus driver hit a semi which had rolled over on the freeway in an earlier accident.
The semi-truck driver was not hurt.
