To make the project work, ADOT had to buy up dozens of homes, changing the landscape in the south valley.

Demolition work began 5-months-ago, turning a once family filled neighborhood into a ghost town.

For 15 years the street was lined with homes, families lived here, and memories were made. Now, an entire neighborhood is practically gone, and a pile of dirt remains.

Soon it will turn into asphalt, and vehicles will be driving on the south mountain freeway.

Many Ahwatukee residents are not rolling out the welcome mat for ADOT.

"There're families that were displaced, these were their first homes, their first memories, a lot of families went thru emotional things in this neighborhood that had to move because of the destruction and the freeway moving in," said Karen Camblin.

So far ADOT has bought more than 160 properties and demolished about 70 homes. About two dozen homes are still standing as homeowners take the state agency to court to determine what they'll be paid for their houses.

Still ADOT is moving full speed ahead, with designers and developers chosen for the freeway construction that is expected to take four years to complete.

"I just wish they would've been able to negotiate and build farther south, you've got too many schools and families being disrupted by all this," said Camblin.

ADOT says they are still on schedule to start construction on the freeway in the summer of 2016.
