PINAL COUNTY, Ariz. (KSAZ) - There are stories all the time about big drug busts in the desert. Those drugs have to be stored until the smugglers go to jail.
And what is happening to tons of marijuana being stored in Pinal County may surprise you. It has become the target of some very unexpected thieves.
PCSO deputies seize a lot of pot out of the desert and off the streets, and it ends up in huge metal containers. But if you look closely there is something a bit odd, there are holes in many of the bundles, and the pot is spread out all over the shelves. So who is tampering with this evidence?
"Mice, they would come in, eat into the bundles, and then build little homes," said Angela Barlow.
Barlow is in charge of storing the marijuana; she says the mice had a field day in here for a while, and she's caught them in the act and possibly under the influence many times.
So were the mice happy and mellow? "Yeah, very mellow," she said.
"People who work here in the storage, sometimes when they pull these out they get a big surprise," said Barlow.
But while the workers were sometimes rattled, the mice were strangely calm. Maybe after all the rummaging around, all they wanted to do was chill out and grab some munchies.
Deputies believe they have the problem under control, but they are keeping a close eye on their evidence lockers just in case.
