GILBERT, Ariz. (KSAZ)
Danika Price was just born last week and is now a happy baby at home.
She survived a chaotic scene coming home from the hospital.
Her dad was about to put her in her carseat when someone stole their car.
"The car revs up, I thought it was the air conditioner, my wife looks up and says oh my god, someone is stealing our car," said Jeff Price.
Gilbert Police say Jon Brandow jumped into the drivers seat after leaving the hospital against medical advice.
He was sent to Mercy Gilbert after he told a judge he was too ill to take part in a misdemeanor court hearing.
"I opened the door and I am like what are you doing, and he said sorry, and then kicks it into reverse and the door smashes into my shoulder," said Jeff.
Jeff suffered a torn rotator cuff as the car peeled away, barely missing Jeff's wife and baby. Police say Brandow smashed into cars as he careened through the parking lot before they could finally arrest him.
Jeff wonders where was hospital security.
Dignity Health, the owners of Mercy Gilbert Medical Center issued the following statement: "No incident like this has ever happened at Mercy Gilbert Medical Center, and the hospital staff took this situation very seriously. It should be noted that any patient may choose to leave a hospital prior to a medical staff's decision to discharge that patient."
Jon Brandow was dealing with a misdemeanor case when he carjacked the family. Now he's behind bars and looking at a variety of felony charges.
