Pedigree responds to claims over wires in dog food

PHOENIX (KSAZ) -
Pictures were posted to the FOX 10 Facebook page over the weekend, they show what appears to be tiny wires sticking out of Pedigree Dog Food.
Despite the concern, a spokesperson for the company tells FOX 10 that there is no reason for pet owners to worry.
"It's absolutely safe, they can be totally confident that it's safe to feed to their pets," said Lisa Campbell.
The Pedigree Facebook page had similar photos posted from worried pet owners over the past few days who wanted to know if there were indeed wires in the food.
"We're confident that this is absolutely safe for our pets if this were a metal wire we would be aware of it. We do several quality checks, and one of those checks is metal detection. So we're confident that this is not metal, we have tested it," said Campbell.
Pedigree says they have tested some of the kibble sent in by concerned consumers. They found what people say look like "wires" is actually part of the ingredients used to make the pet food.
"We use meat and bone meal in our Pedigree Main Meal products, and when you use meat and bone meal some of these natural fibers come through into the finished product, so fibers like pig hair, for example, show up," said Campbell.
