PHOENIX (KSAZ) - Lately, the buzz around town is all about donuts.
Maple bacon, banana cake with chocolate ganache, and chocolate filled with a red wine glaze are just some of the samplings at this valley donut shop.
Head baker, Casey Hopkins, says it's all hands on deck at Welcome Chicken and Donuts.
"I hand dip every, me or a member of my team, we hand dip every single donut that goes into that case and hand fill every donut," he said.
Doors opened a year ago last November and just last week, the shop was named one of the best 33 donut shops in the nation by Thrillist.com.
"I think all of the shops that make that list have an extreme attention to detail from scratch to high-quality ingredients," Hopkins said.
Hopkins, who has a background in organic agriculture, uses all fresh and local ingredients. Flavors chance monthly depending on what's in season, drawing fans from near and far.
Staff is having a hard time keeping the cases full ever since Welcome Chicken and Donuts was named one of the top donut shops in the nation. They say business has more than doubled.
"I had to make over 100, close to 200 extra donuts yesterday and we still sold out," Hopkins said.
Whether it's a dozen or just one savory treat, it seems people can't get enough.
