American Airlines flight diverted to Phoenix to remove unruly passenger

An American Airlines flight made an unscheduled stop in Phoenix after a passenger went on an alarming rant. The plane left Los Angeles this morning and about an hour and a half into the flight the pilot made a decision to land because of the unruly passenger.
That man was taken into custody by Phoenix Police once the plane landed at Sky Harbor International Airport. He's not in a psychiatric emergency facility on a 72-hour hold. The crew became alarmed when the man went on an unintelligible rant about the military, the government, and mentioned 9/11.
The man who is described as being in his 30's walked into the first class section of the plane and went on a tirade. Once on the ground he was detained by police.
"And he said it was his time to give a speech. He started ranting about the military, the government, he was incomprehensible, it sounded like he was giving military commands and he started talking about psychological warfare and bringing the plane down. It seemed like he was having a flashback of sorts, and kind of in this military persona," said Nicoletta Heidegger.
After going off for about 10 minutes, a couple of passengers stepped into action and walked the man back to his seat.
"We got duct tape and handcuffs, and we had to hold this guy in his seat, fastened his seatbelt, and said if you get up we're going to duct tape you together, and so we diverted to Phoenix. The poor guy needs help, but he scared the hell out of everybody, we didn't know at first if he had something with him, and he was very hostile to people with money," said a passenger.
Once the man has undergone the psychiatric evaluation, police say he could face charges for interfering with a flight crew.
