American Airlines flight makes emergency landing at LAX due to mechanical issue

American Airlines flight #564 made an emergency landing Thursday at LAX after a report of a mechanical issue.

The plane took off from San Jose carrying more than 100 passengers shortly after 9 a.m. and was en-route to Phoenix when the problem was reported. The pilot initially reported smoke in the cockpit, and the passengers' oxygen masks were deployed.

The flight landed safely just before 11 a.m.

Los Angeles Fire Department spokesman Brian Humphrey said the plane landed and taxied normally.

The Los Angeles Fire Department confirmed a total of eight patients were evaluated, including the flight attendant and child.

One woman was transported to the hospital complaining of respiratory issues.
