Annual festival, 'Paint PHX' brings unwanted graffiti

A number of businesses along Roosevelt Row in downtown Phoenix were defaced with spray paint after vandals tagged several buildings with graffiti.
This comes on the weekend of "Paint PHX," an annual event that draws hundreds of artists who paint murals across town.
Unfortunately when there's a big event like this some people can take things a bit too far, but we spoke to local artists who say they believe the way to fix this is include rather than exclude them.
This weekend downtown Phoenix welcomed hundreds of artists for the event "Paint PHX," but the event came with something unwelcome, unsanctioned graffiti.
"This great opportunity turned into opportunity for people just to tag randomly anywhere they want and not even put up like art just more so names and letters and shapes and to tag it all this way, I'm really disappointed," said Artist Matheo Cadena.
Local artist Matheo Cadena says although the concept of public art is inspiring, it could use a little tweaking.
"Graffiti artists who are out here today, I'm sure, working on some masterpieces that I’m gunna walk by and I'm going to be like whoa that’s awesome, but I'm going to be sad if I see someone else’s tag along the bottom…kinda like they came and painted over that."
But Mateo believes the answer is not to ban the unsanctioned artists, but rather embrace them.
“I say work with them, collaborate, and make a team effort, something that everyone who works on it will respect, the community will respect it, the graffiti taggers will respect it, because everyone's involved. I feel like you solve the problem that way."
Now Matheo says he and other artists will channel frustration into positive change.
"I'm inspired to communicate and collaborate with the downtown network and the downtown business owners and artists to say let’s fix this."
This was the third year of “Paint PHX” and really there is so much beauty as a result -- hopefully next year the art will stick to the sanctioned places.
