Arizona AG speaks out about bathroom lawsuit

Arizona has joined 10 other states in a federal lawsuit against President Obama.

This comes after the administration said public schools must allow trans gender students to use the bathroom that aligns with the gender they identify with.

Attorney General Mark Brnovich said deciding something like this is best done locally and not by some one size fits all solution from Washington. Supporters say the lawsuit undermines the legally mandated right students have to discrimination free schools.

"This is an example of Washington D.C. taking a sledge hammer to a problem that quite frankly requires a scalpel," said Mark Brnovich.

The state's lawsuit calls the mandate "federal overreach."

"We don't need a Washington bureaucracy telling us how we should solve issues if there are issues here in Arizona. I believe very much that Arizonans and local school districts can address and solve these problems," he said.

The Gay Lesbian and Straight Education Network of Phoenix says the mandate is a step in the right direction to protect the privacy and safety of transgendered students.

The Obama Administration now has 60 days to respond to the lawsuit.
