FBI: Arson suspect accused of shooting at Forest Service shot and killed by law enforcement

- UPDATE: The Federal Bureau of Investigations has now confirmed the death of the arson and shooting suspect.

Forest Lakes Fire Department first reported earlier on Saturday that the allegedly arsonist and suspect who was accused for shooting at a Forest Service employee died.

The suspect was tracked to the area of Timber Camp, which is about 20 miles northeast of Globe.

Early Saturday morning, he engaged law enforcement in gunfire exchange where he was pronounced dead on scene.

On Monday, the suspect was identified as Luis Francisco Vasquez, 32, with a last known address in Tucson.

Law enforcement has been looking for the suspect for incidents during July 3 and 4.

The suspect reportedly lit eight brush fires on Monday, July 3, and fired at a Forest Service employee in the Forest Lakes area the following day.

The Forest Service employee who was shot at was reportedly not injured.

Later that week, the suspect was spotted on the Apache Reservation in Cibecue, Ariz., where the man caught a ride from a stranger and was dropped off in the town.

Investigators learned then that the suspect was possibly headed to Mexico. The following day, on July 9, the suspect was spotted in a resident's backyard, and at a grocery store deli in the Cibecue area.

Further information from Saturday morning's shootout with law enforcement will be released as it becomes available.
