1 dead following pedestrian-involved crash in Gilbert

- Police say at least one person is dead after two pedestrians were struck by a vehicle in Gilbert.

The Gilbert Police Department says the crash happened on Thursday at the intersection of Val Vista and Elliot Roads. A 49-year-old woman, Carrie Brown, was killed and a 53-year-old woman, Shari Irion, is in critical condition.

Both women jogging in the early morning. They were in the crosswalk heading east when the SUV hit them driving south.

People around the area said the intersection at Elliot and Val Vista has caused problems before.

Nate Swift lives around the corner from where the accident happened. He said he heard the commotion when he woke up.

"I heard all the sirens and stuff, and about 30 minutes later I was leaving for school. I walked to the bus stop. And my bus stop is at the park, and while we were standing there waiting for the bus, the helicopter landed right there," said Swift.

Swift said he was worried that his classmates might have been the victims. That was the rumor around school.

"First when we were at school there were some people who went to Gilbert High and we didn't have all of the information," said Swift.

Swift says he's seen similar tragedies in the area before.

"There's a lot of accidents here. Off the top of my head, I know that two or three people who have already died at this intersection," said Swift.
