TEMPE, Ariz. (KSAZ) - It was a heartbreaking crime, a family of five was killed when their SUV plunged into Tempe Town Lake, and police believe the car was crashed into the lake on purpose.
The Maricopa County Medical Examiner released new information that shows the victims were most likely alive when the SUV crashed into the lake.
Inside the SUV; Danica and Glenn Baxter, and their three young children. Family members say the couple were separated, and that she wanted a divorce.
A preliminary autopsy report was released; it says that all five people died from injuries consistent with drowning, meaning the family was likely alive when the car went into the lake. The examiner also labeled the deaths of Danica and the three children as a homicide, and the death of Glenn Baxter as a suicide.
Tempe Police announced this week that they were investigating the deaths as a murder-suicide, that same day authorities released surveillance video showing Glenn Baxter parking the SUV on a running path at the lake, getting out of the vehicle, surveying the area, and then getting back into the SUV and driving it into the lake.
A gun was recovered from inside the SUV, but none of the victims were shot.
The initial report does not have any information about whether anyone had drugs or alcohol in their system. Toxicology tests are being done, but the results are expected to take several weeks.
