Bashas', others removing romaine lettuses, following officials' advice to not eat it

PHOENIX (KSAZ) -- Officials with local supermarket chain Bashas' said they are pulling romaine lettuce from all of its stores.

News of the removal came, after U.S. health officials told people to avoid eating romaine lettuce, due to an E. coli outbreak that has sickened 32 people in 11 states.

In a statement, Ashley Shick with Bashas' Family of Stores said all forms of romaine lettuce will be removed from Bashas', Food City, and AJ's Fine Foods Stores.

"The safety of our customers is our highest priority and a responsibility we take extremely seriously," Shick wrote.

Meanwhile, FOX 10 has learned that Safeway is in the process of pulling all lettuce from shelves. Officials with salad restaurant chain Salad and Go, which has locations in Phoenix, said they will stop serving romaine for the time being.
