Bill that would block casino project not coming up in US House

PHOENIX (AP) -- A bill that would block a casino project now under construction on the west side of the Phoenix area will not come up for a routine approval in the U.S. House of Representatives as expected.

The bill sponsored by Arizona Republican Reps. Trent Franks and Paul Gosar was expected to be on a calendar that limits debate on Monday. But Democratic Rep. Raul Grijalva objected in a letter sent to House Majority Leader Kevin McCarthy earlier this week.

McCarthy's office confirmed Friday that the House Bill 308 is no longer on the calendar.

If enacted the bill would bar gambling at the Tohono O'Odham tribe's nearly completed casino near Glendale.

The bill passed the House on a voice vote last year but never made it out of the Senate.
