PHOENIX (KSAZ) - Officials with U.S. Customs and Border Protection say a 36-year-old Mexican national has been arrested for smuggling six others into the United States.
The incident happened Sunday evening, on Interstate 10 east of Willcox. According to a statement released Monday, agents patrolling rural roads encountered a car with several people inside, heading west. As agents tried to conduct an immigration inspect on the people inside, the driver abruptly stopped the car and fled into the desert.
The alleged smuggler, according to Border Patrol officials, was arrested after a short foot chase. Six other people inside the car, ranging in ages 24 to 42, were also arrested. Two of the six were reportedly found concealed inside the car's trunk, and five of six were found to have been previously charged for immigration violations.
The driver, according to officials, will remain in custody, pending a court decision on immigration violations and federal charges for human smuggling.
No names have been released in this case.
