Car plunges into Scottsdale canal

A man was taken to the hospital after he crashed his car into a canal near Scottsdale and Lincoln, and police say impairment appears to be a factor in the accident.

The driver of a Nissan was heading east on Lincoln when police say he failed to stop, drove onto a pedestrian path and crashed through a gate at about 11:30pm on Saturday night. The vehicle then went airborne and plunged into the canal.

The vehicle was mostly submerged, and the man behind the wheel had to wait at least half an hour before someone heard the commotion and called 911.

Scottsdale Fire crews rescued the man from the car. He was suffering from lower leg injuries and was taken to a nearby hospital. His name has not been released.

Dive crews and a tow truck remained on-scene to pull the vehicle out of the water.
