Cast of Aladdin holds classes for ASU students
TEMPE, Ariz. (FOX 10) -- Fans of theater may know that "Aladdin" is playing at ASU Gammage through Sunday, but what they might not know is that the crew isn't just making an impact on the stage, as cast members have held classes for ASU students.
It all started with a warmup, and then, there was a quick acting tip to set the scene. Two cast members, currently on tour in the musical, sharing their expertise with the up-and-coming theater students.
Many of the shows coming through ASU Gammage hold similar workshops. ASU Music Theater Performance Coordinator Toby Yatso calls the experience crucial.
"It helps us keep our finger on the pulse of what's happening in the industry," said Yatso. "We certainly have our ways that we teach classes here, but it's nice to mix it up every once and a while, and get a different perspective."
Brianna McClure, who dreams of being on Broadway, says the classes are a major confidence booster.
"When you're a student, you're watching these shows, you think they're stars and you get to meet them and you're like, 'oh this is a person just like me'," said McClure.
It's a great lesson in learning combinations quickly. Something career performers are required to do at auditions. McClure says, however, it's not just about nailing the dance combination. There's always something to gain from the instructors.
"Whether you did great in the class or you didn't, it's still a learning experience, so it's always just fun," said McClure.
At the end of class, everyone gathers around the two instructors for some Q and A. It's a crucial part of the class, as it serves as the students' chance to get raw advice. It is something students need in a competitive field to help make their performance dreams come true.
"We get to know how they made it on Broadway, and what we should be preparing to get on Broadway," said McClure.
"Nobody does it alone," said Yatso. "Everyone gets into this art form and succeeds in this artform because they have a village."
