CHANDLER, Ariz. (KSAZ) - A family is dealing with their own struggles takes the time to give back. With two disabled children and a car accident that destroyed their only vehicle, the Castanon's are taking part in a contest to help win a new wheelchair van so their family can move forward.
"The van caught on fire and the van burned to the ground, that was our only vehicle," said Paul Castanon
The Castanon family has been through a lot. Their vehicle was destroyed in a car accident, a vehicle they needed to help transport two of their kids who are disabled.
"We rushed him to the ER and basically within 24 hours he was having surgery on his brain," said Paul.
Their son Josiah at just three months old was diagnosed with hydrocephalus. At 8-years-old, their daughter Savannah was born with a rare bone disease and has had five surgeries in her short life.
Now the family is asking for help in getting votes that could help them win a new van.
"It would like better the quality of life as a family, as a whole," he said.
While the family has struggled, they are giving back by creating a non-profit.
"We do outreaches for our church, we go into neighborhoods that are drug infested, and we do movies for the kids, we reach out to these types of people," said Paul.
And when it comes to winning the wheelchair van, it's something many families are fighting for.
"I wish everyone could actually get a handicapped van because it makes life so much easier... that's our goal; we want to see other families like us flourish. We want to help others and in the process help our son too," he said.
