CHANDLER, Ariz. -- Police are investigating a deadly officer-involved shooting that happened Friday night near Alma School and Warner roads.

Officers responded to a 9-1-1 call about a suicidal man. When they arrived at the scene, they were confronted by the suspect, who was armed with a firearm at a residence. He began firing at those officers, forcing them to take cover.

Police immediately evacuated nearby homes before the suspect fled to his backyard, where he grabbed another weapon.

"Now at this point, we had a perimeter set up, so we had at least two officers set up in the alley on each side of the home and he fired at one of those officers from the rifle and both of the officers returned fire," said Chandler Police Detective Seth Tyler.

Sgt. Daniel Mejia stated, "The adult male suspect was shot and killed. The two Chandler Police Officers were not injured."

The suspect was later identified as 84-year-old Kay Kenniker.
