City council to discuss petition to ban bump stocks in Phoenix

PHOENIX (KSAZ) - Today marks one month since the deadly mass shooting during a country music festival on the Las Vegas Strip and at the request of a community activist, the Phoenix Cit Council will take a look at banning bump stocks.

A ban of bump stocks in Phoenix is unlikely to happen because Arizona law prohibits local governments from passing gun laws that are more strict that the state's.

However, if the city of Phoenix did pass a ban on bump stocks, and a single lawmaker complained, the Arizona Attorney General's Office would have investigate.

If the attorney general's office found that the ban conflicted with state law, Phoenix would risk losing out on state revenue money. Private citizens or groups could also file a lawsuit against the city.

The Phoenix City Council meeting is scheduled to begin at 2:30 p.m.
