Concerns on ASU campus after student was killed

TEMPE, Ariz. (KSAZ) - A case of road rage in Tempe would normally be a story that made news for a few days, but this case is one of the biggest stories in China right now.

The murder of a Chinese student has caused a major uproar in the country.

The killing sparked concerns across the Chinese international student community as many are worried about their safety after a classmate was gunned down at a red light.

We talked to many Arizona State University students on Wednesday. They all expressed shock and sadness and say gun violence isn't a reality in their home country, but now they want to learn how they can protect themselves.

Tempe and ASU police addressed about 200 students, answering questions from the crowd and provided resources on how to stay safe around the community. Police also made clear that the murder of 19-year-old Jiang Yue was completely random and had nothing to do with the fact that she was an international student or from China.

Authorities say 32-year-old Holly Davis shot Yue multiple times after she rear ended Yue's vehicle on Saturday near Broadway and McClintock.

Still, international students say the murder has everyone in their community talking and questioning their own safety on and around campus now.

"I feel very sad. Actually, the first time I hear this news, I feel it's totally not safe in this community because there is no reason," said Szoe Wong, a student.

Does Wong feel better after the meeting?

"Yes, definitely after seeing this, but I also want to tell our students to help ourselves be safe," she replied.

"We were able to lay out that Yue was absolutely an innocent victim. She was an innocent victim of this random violence.. she had nothing to do with this.. her race was not a factor in this," explained Lt. Mike Pooley of the Tempe Police Department.

Davis is facing first degree murder charges and bond was set at $1.5 million.
