DPS: Woman dead, man arrested after crash on I-17 in Phoenix

Authorities say a woman is dead and a man is in custody after a crash on Interstate 17 in Phoenix, south of Camelback Road.

Arizona Department of Safety troopers say one person was spotted running from the scene after the vehicle slammed into the left wall on Sunday.

One victim was thrown from the vehicle and was pronounced dead, according to DPS. She was identified as Vernennice Mastache.

According to DPS, Jaime Muro, the driver who tried to flee from the scene of the accident, is suspected of being impaired. Muro was taken into custody by troopers in a neighborhood nearby. The suspect is facing one count of manslaughter.

Northbound I-17 was shut down while DPS troopers investigated. Traffic exited at Indian School and re-entered at Camelback. At one point, lanes were backed up all the way to Thomas on Sunday morning. The road re-opened at about Noon.
