Fire damages south Phoenix recycling business

Crews from Phoenix Fire are fighting a fire at a business near 19th Avenue and Broadway.

The fire started after 1:30 p.m. Wednesday afternoon in South Phoenix at Solvent Recy-Clean.

A column of large, black smoke was seen rising from the business and witnesses reported hearing explosions.

A Phoenix Fire official stated that the fire is centered on multiple large storage tanks and drums. Some of the tanks have exploded.

Firefighters have several water streams, fighting the fire from a distance.

Emergency crews have evacuated nearby businesses and residences.

By 2:45 p.m. the heavy black smoke was no longer seen as crews continued to stream water onto the barrels at the facility.
