David Glasser Foundation preparing for its first-ever give back event

PHOENIX (KSAZ) - It's been a little more than a year since the death of Phoenix Police officer David Glasser. Soon after Officer Glasser's death, his wife started the David Glasser Foundation. In about a week, the foundation will be hosting its first-ever give back event.

The event is all about kids, as the foundation is asking for backpack donations, for students in need, as the start of the next school year gets closer and closer. The school that will benefit is near the area where Officer Glasser worked, and gave his life for.

"We definitely have one, two, three, four-year goals," said James Byrd, Communications Director for the David Glasser Foundation. "This is just the very first what we're doing. A very small beginning, but we're going to grow this every year."

In order to give every first grader at Cheatham Elementary in Laveen, a backpack the foundation is asking for backpack donations.

"We chose first grade at Cheatham Elementary, because Dave's son will be a first grader this year," said Byrd. "We chose that to carry on a tradition that Dave would be here to be with his son during first grade, so we chose first graders."

Donations will be collected at the Peter Piper Pizza near 51st Avenue and Baseline on July 23, from 4:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m.

"We want to give to these kids, because we know that not all of them can afford new backpacks, and I think that it will be great for them to receive a brand new backpack to go back to school, and start the school year off fresh," said Byrd.

If you don't have a chance to make it out on July 23, you can also eat at any Peter Piper Pizza in the Valley on August 3. If you mention the foundation, a portion of the proceeds from that day will go to the foundation.

"I think Dave would be very impressed with what we're doing and just the way things have developed," said Byrd. "It's only been a year, a little over a year since he was killed, and the support from the community has been huge."
