Designer dog house up for auction to benefit animal welfare

From the Old West style "Stray Dog Saloon" and mid-century modern "Ruff Haven Home," any pooch can have style.

"There were challenges," Designer Danielle Jacques said. "I've never built a dog house before. I had to do research and I wanted to make sure that we used products (that) were safe for the dogs."

Danielle Jacques is the designer of one of these one-of-a-kind homes. They are designed and built by some of the valley's leading architecture and construction firms.

"We have upholstered walls inside," Jacques said. "I needed medical-grade adhesive to make it low."

Anyone can bid on one of these posh pet houses during the Wine for Woods and Beer for Barks event benefiting Arizona Animal Welfare League and Spa, which is the state's oldest and largest no-kill shelter.

"It makes a huge difference," Michael Moorefield said. "Fundraisers like this where we engage with the community and raise funds to save animals, including 4,000 animals just last year."

Michael Moorefield with the AAWL says those animals were saved in part because of $11,000 raised at the same event last year.

"We rely on private donations and small grants for our aging budget," he said. "We don't receive government funds or anything."

"I was really happy that this will be auctioned off to save animals and help animals find a new home," Jacques said.

The auctions happens on Friday at the facings of America in Scottsdale from 5 p.m. to 9 p.m. Tickets for the event are $35 per person or $60 for two people.
