Dog left for dead on side of the road gets second chance at life

PHOENIX (KSAZ) - Hunter's breed may say German Shepherd, but his spirit says survivor.

"Hunter was basically found by the side of the road, hit by a car, struggling to walk... he was covered in blood," said Andra Jeffress, director of the Animal Benefits Club.

Last month, the 3-year-old pup was found clinging to life on the side of the road. Hunter was brought to Maricopa County Animal Care and Control in hopes that his owner would come to claim him.

When that didn't happen, Animal Benefits Club took action.

Despite everyone's best efforts and a six-hour surgery, Hunter's front right leg had to be amputated.

"He does very well on three legs," Jeffress said. "You're not going to be able to hike or jog with him, but he's a great dog. He interacts with other dogs and children really well."

Above all, Hunter hasn't let the trauma he's been through define him. He's loving, gentle and very social.

Now on the mend, Jeffress says ABC is trying to raise almost $6,000 to cover medical costs and Hunter is looking for a place to call home.

"He's a phenomenal animal, so any help you could give with his veterinary bills would be very greatly appreciated," she said.
