Police: Man attempted to set DPS trooper vehicle on fire

Around 1:30 a.m. on Thanksgiving, Mesa police say several Department of Safety troopers were eating a meal in the area of Broadway and Dobson. While the troopers were inside the restaurant, a man attempted to set a DPS trooper vehicle on fire.

"The suspect rolled up newspaper, opened up the gas cap to the tank, and lit the paper on fire. Fortunately, the fire did not fully ignite," said Mesa Police Sgt. Diana T. Williams.

When a trooper exited the restaurant, he noticed the man by the unoccupied vehicle, along with some damage by the car's gas cap and tank.

Williams says 24-year-old Osvaldo Oregel was detained and later admitted to attempting to set the trooper vehicle on fire.

Oregel was booked into jail for one count of arson, which is a class four felony.

No motive has been established and police suspect Oregel was impaired.

No one was injured in this incident.
