DPS: Suspect leads troopers on pursuit across Valley with infant in vehicle

PHOENIX (KSAZ) - A pursuit suspect was arrested Sunday night after he led DPS troopers on a chase across several cities with a 6-month-old child in the vehicle. 

Arizona DPS says the situation began during an attempted traffic stop near Val Vista Rd. and U.S. 60 and the driver, identified as Joseph Ortiz, refused to stop. 

Ortiz exited the freeway at Greenfield Rd., then got back on the freeway heading westbound along U.S. 60, reaching speeds in excess of 80 mph. 

The vehicle was eventually stopped at 45th Ave. and Thomas Rd. with the help of Phoenix police and Ortiz was arrested.

A female passenger also in the vehicle called 911 and told a dispatcher that she asked Ortiz to stop, but he refused.There were no injuries to the woman or child during the incident.

Officials say a handgun was also reportedly tossed from Ortiz's vehicle during the pursuit, and later recovered by Phoenix police.

Ortiz has two outstanding warrants and now faces felony flight from police, kidnapping and driving on a suspended license.
