Early-morning house fire makes crews go on the defensive

- Firefighters battled a large house fire early Monday morning.

The fire broke out at a home at about 2:30 a.m. near El Mirage and Thunderbird. Firefighters say they had to go on the defensive to battle the fire, which had flames shooting through the roof of the home.

The house was vacant at the time of the fire and firefighters are calling it a total loss.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.
