Families band together to raise funds for cancer patients

MESA, Ariz. (KSAZ) - Bryan and Melissa Kovalesky have recently dedicated their lives to helping cancer patients and their families shortly after Melissa discovered she had chronic myeloid leukemia.

"I had just turned 30 when I was diagnosed and I actually thought I was in the best shape of my life," Melissa said. "It wrecked our world for a while, but we're good now... we're getting through it!"

"The situation that came about with her diagnosis was a shock to our entire world and we knew we were going to do everything we could to get through it all," Bryan said.

The Kovalesky's and a group of friends put together a foundation, "Families Raising Hope," where they hope to make a difference for other families.

"We, at that point, just realized the need," Bryan said. "There's more people that deal with this than we knew of as far as just the financial constraints that it puts on families, and that's how 'Families Raising Hope' was created by just a couple of families wanting to help out other families."
