Family speaks out after teen killed at strip mall

- A family is speaking out after their loved one was shot and killed in the West Valley.

The teen was shot and early Saturday morning near 67th avenue and Bethany Home road and passed away in the afternoon.

Fox 10's Stefania Okolie spoke with family and friends at a vigil held Saturday evening.

17-year-old Victoria Salinas has a shattered heart: she has to the live with a horrifying image for the rest of her life.  "I hear the glass break and then all the sudden i just see him jerk a little and I got scared," she explained.

She was sitting in the passenger seat.  Her boyfriend, 18 year old Juan Diaz, was in the drivers seat when someone started shooting at him.

"I felt his hands and there was just so much blood and it was going everywhere and I freaked out," Salinas remembers.  She says she struggled to pull Juan from the car.  He was shot in the back of the head.

"I yelled for help .. and that's when a security guard came and said someone call 911 and they pulled me off of him and took him."

She learned early later that Juan was brain dead and on life support when the decision was made to end life support.  Friends and family are now grieving, saying Juan was a man who was turning is life around for the better.  He and Salinas became parents to a baby boy just 5 months ago.
