Loop 202 Red Mountain westbound reopened at State Route 51 after fatal crash

A deadly crash resulted in the closure of the westbound lanes of Loop 202 Red Mountain at State Route 51, per the Arizona Department of Transportation.

Five vehicles were involved in the collision Tuesday night.

"A pickup truck traveling westbound in the HOV lane rear-ended an SUV causing a chain reaction crash involving three additional vehicles," explained Department of Public Safety Trooper Kameron Lee.

The driver of the pickup truck died. It is unknown at this time if speed or impairment played a factor in this crash.

"A passenger in the SUV was also transported for minor injuries. All others involved were evaluated on scene, but not transported," added Lee.

DPS troopers rerouted Loop 202 traffic to SR 51 northbound and Interstate 10 eastbound.

The freeway reopened at 9:30 p.m.
