FBI training law enforcement, others on bombs

PHOENIX, Ariz. (KSAZ) - Bomb attacks are a threat people face, and locally, the FBI has spent the past three days training those on the front lines about its dangers.

The training is designed to educate people on how terrorists make bombs, the chemicals they use, the type of damage they can do, and what an actual explosion looks and feels like.

The fact is, not every bomb explodes the same way, and the training shows just that.

"It's important for them, as first responders, when they make a traffic stop, when they go into a home as a fireman, if they see chemicals that we learned about, they should call a bomb technician and the FBI," said Special Agent Phillip Bates.

With the increase in threats from ISIS terrorists, as well as an increase in threats from home grown terrorism, the training provided is becoming more important, as students learned about the chemicals and other ingredients that make up a bomb, as well as the look and feel of different types of bombs.

Bombs can be made with different ingredients, from military C-4 explosive to something as common as flour and pepper. Retail workers, therefore, are being trained to look for suspicious behaviors and purchases.

The FBI holds explosives training in Arizona two times per year.
